Runners who took part in this years Scilly Ten have raised a fantastic 2,626 for the Cornwall Precious Lives Appeal.
The event which took place in April attracted more than one hundred runners from the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall and included special races for primary and secondary school children from the islands.
Children from the Five Islands School, which has bases on St Marys, St Agnes, Tresco, Bryher and St Martins, came together on Friday at their St Marys base to present a cheque to the Precious Lives Appeal.
They were also joined by Andrew May and Jackie Hayman from the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, sponsor of the Scilly Ten, George Teideman on behalf of the Precious Lives Appeal and Dawn Bradford, Chris Douglas and Barrie Nuttall, organisers of the Scilly Ten (pictured).
Jackie Hayman, Marketing Manager for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company said: We were extremely happy to sponsor the Scilly Ten for the second year running and we are absolutely delighted that so much money was raised for the Precious Lives Appeal.
Were already looking forward to next years event, which is due to take place on Sunday 8th April 2012. Were looking at holding the run on one of the off-islands, making the course a little more challenging and incorporating some off-road running, so participants dont get complacent!
The 2011 Scilly Ten took place on Sunday 10 April on St Marys. The event comprises of two 5 mile laps of the island, is open to teams and individuals, and has a separate 2.5km course for primary school children, making it an event that all the family can take part in.
Dawn Bradford from the Scilly Ten Committee added: The Scilly Ten was a resounding success this year and we are especially proud of all the young boys and girls who took part. Thanks to everyones fundraising efforts, a very impressive 2,626 was raised, and we look forward to repeating this success again next year.
The Scilly Ten is one of a programme events organised by the Isles of Scilly Friends of the Childrens Hospice South West. Fundraising events are held throughout the summer, including evening concerts and sponsored guided tours, to raise money for the new hospice being built in St Austell. Last years fundraising efforts raised a staggering 15,000 over the course of the year.
George Teideman, Chairman of the Isles of Scilly Friends of Childrens Hospice South West said: We had a very successful weekend and the Scilly Ten was a jolly fine day. We would like to thank everyone who took part, especially the youngsters who showed great enthusiasm and the Steamship Company for putting a lot of time and effort into sponsoring the event.
