Recycling bank boost for Isles of Scilly
21 February 2011

21 Feb 2011
Residents on the Isles of Scilly can continue to be eco-friendly whilst supporting charity now that a brand new Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL) clothing bank has been placed on St Marys, thanks to the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company.

The clothing bank, located on the quay, was in desperate need of refurbishment due to its constant exposure to the elements. The Isles of Scilly Steamship Company provided free transportation on board freight vessel the Gry Maritha for the new bank to be transported from Penzance to the Isles of Scilly.

Jackie Hayman, Marketing Manager for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company, said: The clothing bank on St Marys provides islanders with an excellent opportunity to put their unwanted clothing to good use and stop unnecessary waste going to landfill. Were more than happy to transport the bank to and from the mainland in support of SATCoLs Clothing Collection Scheme.

Every household on the Scillies is provided with a SATCoL reusable shopping bag to make donating their unwanted clothing to the bank more convenient.

The bank can hold 325 kilos of clothing, and is emptied weekly by a local volunteer. The collections are taken to a central facility in the Midlands from which some of the donations are used to stock SATCoL charity shops and meet any UK humanitarian needs identified by The Salvation Army, with any remainder transported to Eastern Europe for sale.

Profit that SATCoL receives from the sale of the clothing is gift-aided to The Salvation Army to help fund its valuable work throughout the UK including homeless services, family tracing, elderly care, assistance at emergency incidents and much, much more. In the past three years alone, SATCoL has gift-aided 16.2 million to The Salvation Army.

Paul Ozanne, National Recycling Coordinator for SATCoL added: Wed like to thank the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company for its generosity in helping us update our clothing bank on the island. Textiles are the UKs fastest growing household waste stream and by recycling unwanted clothing and other textiles we can help the environment by reducing what we send to landfill and reusing valuable resources. We hope the new clothing bank will encourage Isles of Scilly residents to continue being green as well as raising funds for a well-loved charity.
