THANK YOU

I would like to say Thank You to you all, on behalf of ORCA, for the opportunity to carry out surveys on the bridge of the Scillonian and for the time given by Tamsin and Emma to accommodate our volunteers. Do please convey these sentiments to Captain Dave Redgrave, Pete and fellow officers - they have always been most friendly, accommodating and keen to engage us on marine activity they experience in our absence.
This year we have been training new volunteers, many of whom are in the marine biology field, and enthusing more and more people to care for the oceanic environment generally. Hopefully we have also helped to raise awareness of Scillonian passengers to the wonderfully diverse marine environment and especially the Whales, Dolphins and Harbour Porpoise that inhabit the seas off the Cornish coast and the Isles of Scilly.
I have totted up figures from the data forms received so far, which reads:
17 surveys completed April to October, during which there were 62 separate sightings logged with an approx total of 350 cetaceans spotted covering Harbour Porpoise, Common and Bottlenose Dolphins, Minke Whales, and Basking Sharks. Grey seals, Sunfish and various Sea-birds and migrating birds have also been seen.
Scientific data is used by ORCA to map locations of sightings, identify trends etc. We also provide data to other conservation trusts/charities, governments and students, which all goes towards protecting whales and dolphins.
With best wishes to you all
Rosie
