A group of junior sea cadets from Penzance have taken a special educational trip to the Isles of Scilly to learn about the history of the Scillies and the Scillonian III.
The five junior cadets (pictured), aged 10-12, were given a guided tour of the Scillonian III to discover how the ship is run and to learn about its past, before arriving on St Marys.
During their time on the island they visited the garrison and the museum to find out more about the history of the Scillies, as well as taking some time out for beach games and rock-pooling.
The Junior Cadets were accompanied on their expedition by Chairman of the Penzance Sea Cadets Unit, Dr Paddy Hicks, and Acting Petty Officer John Howells.
APO John Howells said: The Junior Cadets were really excited about having the chance to go to the Scillies, as normally its only the older Cadets who get to go on expeditions. This is the first time theyve been on a ship of this size, and its fantastic for them to gain the experience at such an early age.
Dr Paddy Hicks described the trip as magical, and said It was perfect, the weather was fantastic and the sea was calm all the way. The Cadets were keen to learn about the history of the Scillies and particularly enjoyed walking around the garrison and scrambling around the cannons. One of the highlights was being taken up onto the bridge of the Scillonian III and seeing a pod of dolphins you couldnt have planned it better.
The day trip was organised by Mike Sullivan, Commanding Officer of the Penzance Sea Cadets, in conjunction with the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company which operates the Scillonian III.
Were really grateful to the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company for sponsoring the trip; money is tight at the minute and it was very generous of them to offer. We think its incredibly important to educate the Junior Cadets about the history of the Scillies, as so many people are guilty of losing sight of whats on their doorstep. The Scillonian III plays a big part in the life of people in Penzance and on the Isles of Scilly, and we hope to strengthen our ties with them in the future.
Jackie Gwennap, Marketing Manager at the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company commented: We are extremely supportive of the Penzance Sea Cadets and do what we can to assist them in any activities they undertake. We were more than happy to provide travel to the Cadets and their group leaders so that they could learn about the Scillonian III and the Scillies.
