Scillonian III supports Clean Cornwall
30 March 2010

30 Mar  2010

Scillonian III, the sea link between the mainland and Isles of Scilly, played her part in Clean Cornwall Week last week by transporting 7 Penzance Sea Cadets to the Isles of Scilly to take part in a beach clean.

The Sea Cadets sailed to St Marys on Saturday, 27 March and were met by enthusiastic cleaning teams from the ANOB and other organisations. The Cadets were quickly put to work cleaning up rubbish and debris that had collected in the Islands beaches.

The teams spent the whole day picking up litter and learning about the impact littering has on the beaches, especially on the Isles of Scilly as they are the first landfall for many items out at sea.

As well as taking part in the beach clean, the sea cadets also had the chance to spend time exploring Scillonian III. They were able to spend time with the Captain, David Redgrave on the Bridge and helped the Ships Purser, Marcia Still.

Jackie Gwennap, Marketing Manager at the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company said: We are extremely supportive of the Penzance Sea Cadets and do what we can to assist them in any activities they undertake, while at the same time offering opportunities for training and experiences on Scillonian III.

We were more than happy to provide travel to the Cadets and their group leaders so that they could take part in the beach clean.

Scillonian III sails from Penzance to St Marys from 27th March until 30th October 2010. The full schedule can be found at www.ios-travel.co.uk.

Ends.

Notes to Editors:

Isles of Scilly Steamship Company Ltd was formed on 26 March 1920 and the first Scillonian Ship began regular trips to the Isles of Scilly on Thursday 2 February 1926. Since then the company has continually operated the shipping service which is a life line for the Isles of Scilly.

This year will be Scillonian IIIs 33rd year of service. The ship was commissioned and built for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company by Appledore Shipbuilders Ltd in Devon with work starting in 1973. She sailed her maiden voyage on 19th May 1977 and since then has become a signature sight of the Islands and a preferred method of travel for many visitors and islanders alike.
