Special Sunday sailing on Scillonian III for Cornwalls Samaritans
26 April 2010

26 Apr  2010
Cornwalls Samaritans are taking advantage of a special offer to sail to the Isles of Scilly next month on-board Scillonian III to celebrate the charitys 40th anniversary.

The Isles of Scilly Steamship Company has offered the organisation the chance to travel from Penzance on a special Sunday sailing to help the Truro-based charity raise funds for its work.

The trip will take place on Sunday 16 May and the Steamship Company is offering a special price of just 25 per adult for the return trip, which is a substantial saving on the normal public daytrip return fare of 35.

Wendy Overshott, Samaritans Director in Cornwall, commented: This is a really wonderful offer which is not only for the Samaritans, but for anyone who wants to join us on a visit to the Scillies. Normally the Scillonian doesnt sail on a Sunday, so this is a very special opportunity for people who are unable to travel to the beautiful islands during the week. Im really keen to attract as many people as possible to join in the fun and create awareness of this really important charity lets go for a boatful.

The Scillonian will depart from Penzance at 09:15 and leave St Marys at 16:30, giving travellers plenty of time to explore St Marys and other islands.

Jeff Marston, Chief Executive of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company added: Were delighted to be supporting the work of the Samaritans in Cornwall by helping with a sailing on Scillonian on a Sunday. The work of the charity is so important and were really pleased that were able to help with their fundraising efforts in this way.

Bookings for trips on the Scillonian III can be made by calling the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company on 0845 710 5555. More information can be found at www.

Notes to Editors (Samaritans):

Cornwall Samaritans is an entirely voluntary organisation supported by public donations, grants and legacies. It currently costs over 40,000 each year to provide the emotional support to those in distress.

There are over 120 trained listening volunteers and the Truro branch is manned for 150 hours each week out of a possible 168. When closed, calls are transferred to neighbouring branches in the South West.

The branch at 19 Treyew Road, Truro, is open for visitors each day between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Appointments are not necessary. There are over 40,000 caller contacts to the Truro branch each year.

Notes to Editors (Isles of Scilly Steamship Co):

Isles of Scilly Steamship Company Ltd was formed on 26 March 1920 and the first Scillonian Ship began regular trips to the Isles of Scilly on Thursday 2 February 1926. Since then the company has continually operated the shipping service which is a life line for the Isles of Scilly.

This year will be Scillonian IIIs 33rd year of service. The ship was commissioned and built for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company by Appledore Shipbuilders Ltd in Devon with work starting in 1973. She sailed her maiden voyage on 19th May 1977 and since then has become a signature sight of the Islands and a preferred method of travel for many visitors and islanders alike.
