The Isles of Scilly Steamship Companys freight vessel, the Gry Maritha, has set sail with a new Ships Master, Paul Stevens.
Paul has worked for the company for more than 10 years and has held the position of Relief Master of the Gry Maritha for the past three and a half years. Paul takes over the role from colleague, David Redgrave who was recently appointed as the Master of Scillonian III.
Life at sea is second nature to Paul. As well as time spent on the water with the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company onboard the Gry Maritha, Paul also skippered fishing vessels for 25 years. Paul joined the company in 2000 as the ships Relief Engineer, he then took on the role of Chief Mate from 2003 and became Relief Master in 2006.
Andrew May, Chairman of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company said: Paul Stevens has been an excellent Relief Master for the past three and a half years. We, as a board, had no hesitation in promoting him to the role of Ships Master.
Paul has many years of experience behind him and we know he is extremely capable. I am sure that Paul will excel in his new role as master of the Gry Maritha.
Paul takes up his role just in time to oversee the loading of the first Gig to be transported to the Isles of Scilly for the 21st Gig Weekend which takes place from Friday, 30 April until Monday, 3 May 2010. The first gig will be loaded onto the Gry Maritha in Penzance on Monday, 22 February.
The Gry Maritha is currently sailing from Penzance on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, returning from the Isles of Scilly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Ends.
