Success for School Recycling Project
01 January 2009

1 Jan  2009
Mermaid sculpture marks the success of school recycling project

Year 3 pupils from Five Islands School have combined their interest in sustainability with creative skills as part of a recycling initiative known as the Yellow Woods Challenge an educational competition run by the Yellow Pages and the Woodland Trust.

The educational competition encourages schools in Cornwall and Scilly to recycle old Yellow Pages directories in return for educational materials and cash prizes whilst educating children about the environment, saving the books from landfill and supporting the Woodland Trust.

On the Isles of Scilly the project involves collaboration with the AONB and Five Islands School to collect the old directories and the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company to transport the books to the mainland where they are recycled into animal bedding.

This year 150 yellow pages were collected, but before being loaded onto the Gry Maritha the directories were transformed into a sculpture of a yellow mermaid by the year 3 class as another part of the competition. An additional 580 phone directories were collected as part of the recycling drive and were also transported back to Penzance for recycling.

Jeff Marston, Chief Executive of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company said:
We are involved in a number of initiatives which lend a helping hand to the Island communities we serve and the Yellow Pages recycling scheme is a great example of how children on the islands can learn an important lesson about sustainability whilst helping their schools to raise funds. The Gry Maritha and Scillonian provide year-round lifeline services between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly and will have originally transported the directories to homes and businesses across the Islands so its great to think that were working together to complete the circle and transport the thousands of copies back to the mainland.
