Wildlife Watching on Scillonian III
13 June 2009

13 Jun 2009
Wildlife watching trip Saturday 13th June on board Scillonian

On Saturday 13th June the Scillonian sails to the Isles of Scilly with Cornwall Wildlife Trust guide Paul Semmens on board to help you look out for marine wildlife. This spring there have already been sightings of harbour porpoises, Rissos and common dolphins and even a minke whale. In the last few days of warm weather there have also been many sightings of basking sharks.

Now is a wonderful time to visit Scilly with turquoise seas and the flowers at their best. The islands are probably one of the best places in the country to see migrant birds and this spring has included golden oriole, red-rumped swallow, little bittern and bee-eater.

Paul says, The Scillonian is probably the best platform on which to see marine life. Id encourage with an interest in wildlife to join me on this trip to take in the vast of array of wildlife that can be seen on the way.

Seabirds seen from the Scillonian have included puffins, gannets, manx shearwaters, storm petrels and great skuas, a wonderful spectacle for passengers on board.

The boat sails at 9.15am from Penzance and leaves St.Marys at 4.30pm.
If Cornwall Wildlife Trust is mentioned when booking you will receive a reduced adult ticket price of 25 (normally 35). This offer is open to all. To book call Isles of Scilly Travel on 0845 710 555, email [email protected] or visit the Isles of Scilly Travel Centre, Quay Street, Penzance TR18 4BZ. For more details about this trip and recent marine wildlife sightings from the Scillonian visit www.islesofscilly-travel.co.uk/wildlife.htm.

The Isles of Scilly Steamship Company is also working with both Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trusts to help raise funds for the Trusts and to spread the word about wildlife conservation in our seas. Throughout June, July and August, anyone booking any return day trip on the Scillonian III will be entitled to a years free membership to either Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trusts.

Cornwall Wildlife Trust works on a variety of Livings Seas marine projects throughout Cornwall, helping protect Cornwall's marine wildlife for the future. Find out more at www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/conservationprojects/living_seas.
