Join the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust in celebrating the UKs amazing sea animals and plants during National Marine Week in August. Local and visiting families alike are invited to take part in fun events with a marine theme in the Isles of Scilly in the first week of August.
Events kick off at St Agnes fete in the afternoon of Sunday 2nd August where the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust will have a stall and all sorts of activities on offer. Make yourself a seahorse badge, create a pen pot holder in the shape of a basking shark or win a prize in the beachcombers scavenger hunt.
On Wednesday 5th August the Wildlife Trust will be at St Martins fete from 1pm with more games and competitions. Are you ready for the challenge of the Plaice Race?! Find out why the Isles of Scilly has such a special marine environment and what the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust is doing to look after it.
For both fetes the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust is teaming up with the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, who also seek to enhance peoples enjoyment of the fantastic natural environment of the islands. Their focus for National Marine Week is on the problem of litter in our oceans and the damage it can cause to marine life, come and find out more and play the beach litter game.
Thursday is the day for watching out for whales, dolphins and seals as we join our expert marine wildlife spotter, Paul Semmens on Penninis Head, St Marys to mount a cliff top watch. Bring your binoculars from 1pm-2:30pm and there is a chance to spot harbour porpoises or even minke whales.
On Friday at 11:30am meet Marine Project Officer Angie Gall on the beach at Porth Loo, St Marys to join in with a rockpool ramble. Spend an hour and a half exploring the seashore and you will be astounded at the creatures you find. You will need suitable footwear for getting wet and children must bring an adult along.
National Marine Week is about getting everyone out and enjoying the marine environment. Whether you are young or old there is so much we can see and learn on the shores of these islands, so please come and join in the fun.
