Young Cornish police cadets will be developing their crime prevention and investigation skills on the Isles of Scilly next week when they take part in a training exercise designed to support community policing on the mainland and the islands.
On Monday 3rd August eight Penwith Community Cadets between the ages of 13-17 will travel to St Marys on Scillonian III for a three day cadet camp which will include realistic crime scenario training with shops on St Marys.
To give the cadets a taste of the types of incident they could expect to face if they followed a career with the constabulary, the local police have arranged a series of staged incidents, including burglary and shop lifting to put the youngsters through their paces. The cadets will learn about scene of crime risk assessment, dealing with possible confrontation and how to make an arrest along with other key crime fighting skills.
During their time on St Marys the cadets will be talking to businesses about steps they can take to reduce the risk of crime.
One of the Penwith Community Police Cadet Leaders PCSO Vikki White, who is also part of the St Ives Neighbourhood Team, explained the value of the trip for the development of the cadets: Although we have run similar crime prevention and crime scenario exercises in our own beat areas, this will be our first trip to the Islands and it will enable the cadets to apply what theyve learned to a new setting, learn new skills and build their confidence.
The majority of the costs of the trip are being met by previous fundraising initiatives but were extremely appreciative of the help weve have had from the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company to keep our travel costs down and make the trip possible. The Isles of Scillys Army cadets are kindly letting us use their drill hall and camp site and the islands police have also been incredibly supportive. Our cadets have worked really hard over the last year and the trip to the Isles of Scilly is a nice reward for the time and dedication theyve put into crime prevention initiatives in their area and charity challenges.
Jeff Marston, Chief Executive of Isles of Scilly Steamship Company said: The Isles of Scilly Steamship Company is involved in a number of local community initiatives and we are delighted to support the Penwith Police Cadets on trip to the Isles of Scilly. Its wonderful to see young people giving something back to their community and hope that the exercise benefits both the young cadets taking part and also shops on St Marys receiving the additional crime prevention advice.
The Police Cadets programme provides an ideal opportunity to bridge the gaps between the police, young people and the community. Supervised by Youth Intervention Officers, Neighbourhood Teams and the Special Constabulary, the cadets are very much a part of the extended police family. Cadets learn all about life in the police force and enjoy presentations from different departments within the force such as the Dog Section, Armed Response and Forensics.
Although the cadet programme is not being used as a recruitment tool, the Constabulary recognises that the provision of skills is likely to benefit the organisation and other employers in the future and make school-aged children more likely to challenge instances of anti-social behaviour or disorder within their community.
