New Ships Master takes the helm of Scillonian III
05 January 2010

5 Jan  2010
David Redgrave, the Ships Master of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Companys freight vessel, the Gry Maritha, has been appointed as the new Master of Scillonian III, the passenger vessel operating between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly.

David Redgrave takes over from Captain David Pascoe, who retires this year after almost 28 years working for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company, six of those years as Captain.

David has worked in the shipping industry from the age of 16 and he brings a wealth of experience to the role having worked for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company since 2003. During his time on board the Gry Maritha David has progressed through the ranks, becoming the ships Relief Master before taking up the role of Ships Master in 2006.

The appointment of Scillonian IIIs Master followed a rigorous selection process which involved an external assessment by an experienced Master Mariner and an interview with the Chairman and the Chief Executive of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company.

Andrew May, Chairman of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company said: Jeff Marston and I were fortunate that the quality and calibre of applicants for this key role was extremely high, all of them possessing excellent skills and experience and all being very capable. Choosing between them was very difficult.

David Redgrave has worked for the Company for seven years and has a proven track record of captaining vessels and servicing the route from Penzance to the Isles of Scilly. David is extremely level headed and possesses excellent organisational and operational skills. I am sure he will do a first rate job as Ships Master of Scillonian III.

Scillonian III is currently docked in Penzance undergoing her annual maintenance schedule.

Scillonian III will return to regular scheduled service in March and will be operating throughout the 2010 season.

This year will be Scillonian IIIs 33rd year of service. The ship was commissioned and built for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company, by Appledore Shipbuilders Ltd of Devon, with work starting in 1973. She sailed her maiden voyage on the 19th May 1977 and since then she has become a signature sight of the islands and a preferred method of travel for many visitors and islanders alike.

Ends.
