Passengers travelling on the Scillonian III passenger ferry between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly have raised just over 1,800 for Cornwall Hospice Care.
Fortnightly collections have been made on the quay at Penzance throughout the summer sailing season, and now the collections have been totalled up to reach a fantastic 1,804.
The Scillonian IIIs charity donations are organised by the Ships Purser Marcia Still, who has been responsible for arranging passenger collections for local charities for the past three years.
Marcia said: Cornwall Hospice Care is a local charity that is particularly close to my heart as my dad Dudley was cared for at St Julias Hospice in Hayle, Collecting donations from Scillonian passengers is my way of saying thank you for all of the support given by the wonderful staff.
On the return journey to Penzance as passengers are preparing to disembark, I provide them with a bit of information about the charity and why were doing the collection, and then give them the opportunity to donate on the quay. I am delighted by how generous our passengers have been this year and by how much money we have raised for such a fantastic cause.
Cornwall Hospice Care is an independent Cornish charity, providing 28 specialist palliative care beds at its two hospices, St Julias in Hayle and Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell. Being an independent charity, Cornwall Hospice Care relies heavily on charitable donations and fundraising by the public to continue to operate.
A check for the 1,804 raised by Scillonian III passengers was presented by Marcia Still to Sarah Newton from Cornwall Hospice Care at Isles of Scilly Travel Centre in Penzance. This brings the total amount of money raised by Scillonian passengers over the past three years to 5,661.
Sarah Newton, Community Fundraiser for Cornwall Hospice Care said: We really appreciate the generosity of the local community and the continued support of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group. This money will help us to continue to provide specialist medical care to the people of Cornwall living with a life limiting illness.
The Scillonian III is operated by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company and provides a vital link between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly. 2012 marked the Scillionians 35th year of service.
