Isles of Scilly passenger ship, Scillonian III, has completed her annual maintenance and surveys and left Penzance Dry Dock, ready to begin her 35th year of service next month.
Having passed her annual passenger ship certification with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Scillonian III departed Penzance Dry Dock on Thursday 9 February. The ship is now in wet dock, where a series of final preparations will be made before she begins sailing on 19 March. The first sailings will be for freight while the cargo vessel, Gry Maritha, enters Dry Dock for her annual surveys and maintenance. Scillonian III will commence passenger sailings on March 26.
As a part of the ships annual spring clean, the hull has been completely cleaned and repainted, the propellers have been polished and the interior and exterior of the ship have undergone general repairs and maintenance ready to welcome the first passengers of 2012. A selection of behind the scenes images have been uploaded to the company Facebook page for people to view.
Kevin Ayres, Marine Superintendent at the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group said: Scillonian III has been dry docked for the past few weeks while the MCA and Lloyds Register carry out their annual certification surveys. This has given us the chance to carry out some general repairs, maintenance and cleaning. We are pleased to report that all works have been completed on time and to plan, and we can now continue with maintenance in wet dock and prepare the vessel for the coming season.
Scillonian III operates a regular shipping service from Penzance to St Marys from March until November, providing a lifeline service to residents on the islands. In 2012, Scillonian III will be celebrating her 35th year as the only passenger ship servicing the Isles of Scilly.
Penzance Dry Dock is also operated by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, since it took over the lease in 2009. The Dry Dock has been based in Penzance for more than 90 years, offering services to both local vessels and ships from around the world.
