A group of 60 children from St Uny School have spent the day at Lands End Airport, finding out how a working airfield runs.
The 8-10 year olds were given a tour of the airport in the morning, visiting six different stations to learn about check-in, Skybus operations, engineering and hangars, the different types of aircraft, the fire station and fire engines and air traffic control.
In the afternoon they were treated to scenic tours on board Skybus, enjoying stunning aerial views of the local coastline.
Staff from Lands End Airport and the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company were on hand to lead the tour and inform the students how the different departments at the airport work.
Airport Manager Chris Pearson said: Visiting Lands End Airport helps the children with their current study theme of Holidays and is the perfect way for them to learn first hand about the local travel industry in action. We were delighted to welcome the students from St Uny and they clearly enjoyed their tour and afternoon Skybus flight. I heard one child saying they had been too excited to sleep the night before and several didnt want to get out of the plane when the flight was over - they were asking if they could go up again!
The children, who are all in years four and five at St Uny, are learning about holidays as a part of their Key Stage 2 studies.
The visit to Lands End Airport was arranged by Carol Julian, who added: We would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff at the airport, who were extremely accommodating of our visit. The children had a fantastic time and found it immensely enjoyable as well as educational. The highlight for them was undoubtedly the scenic flights on Skybus for many of them it was their first time flying and they were so excited!
Lands End Airport is operated by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company, which also operates the daily Skybus flights to and from the Isles of Scilly from Lands End Airport, Newquay, Exeter, Bristol and Southampton.
