Inter Island Charity Walk 2011 - Wednesday 28th September

This year there are favourable tides again for the annual Inter Island Charity Walk- a fully supported RNLI event that guides 100 sponsored walkers at Autumn equinox tide low water across and through sea, sand and land from St. Martins to Tresco via Samson and Bryher.
The event is supported by a team of volunteers, including 3 manned safety boats (2 from Bryher Boatshare), 10 stewards and 4 lifeguards (2 local and 2 volunteer RNLI lifeguards from Cornwall).
The Inter Island Charity Walk is an RNLI event due to this essential emergency service insuring and supporting the event with all registration fees going direct to the charity.
The walk is initiated and organised by local resident Clare Lewis who says of the event:
It is a unique opportunity to see the islands from a completely different vantage in a safe and enjoyable way; the tides only allow this once or twice a year. This event raises money for some essential charitable organisations that directly contribute to ensuring our fantastic marine environment is kept safe and beautiful.
The walks capacity is limited to 100 participants in the interests of safety, and as a result spaces are sought after. This year there is a minimum of 50 to be raised per walker which is standard form for events of this kind. This ensures entrants commitment to participation and that a worthwhile amount of money is raised for the charities benefitting and the efforts put into organising it.
Clare hopes this years walk raises a record amount of sponsorship money for the designated marine related charities of the RNLI Lifeguard appeal, the Marine Conservation Society, Surfers Against Sewage and The Isles of Scilly Seabird Recovery Project. These charities all do important work in promoting safety, raising awareness, stewarding and protecting our marine environment.
Clare would like to extend her thanks again to all those that help make the event run so smoothly and safely the beach lifeguards, event stewards, support boat providers Bryher Boatshare and handlers as well as the Isles of Scilly Steamship Co. who provide free transport for the visiting beach lifeguards and Star Castle who accommodate them for free.
Registration for the Inter Island Charity Walk is at St.Marys Bike Hire from 9.00am -5.00pm Monday Saturday (closing Tuesday 27th September or when 100 walker capacity is reached) where you will find further details on the event.
